Buhari speaks in Daura yesterday, clearly not a student of Nigerian history, government, economy or society

Eid-el-Kabir: Buhari does not kapish

As the Muslim faithful, including President Muhammadu Buhari, gathered at the Daura praying ground to mark the sacrifice of Ibrahim (Abraham), members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) also showed up to celebrate with the president.

Addressing the “corpers”,  Buhari called them “NYSC students”.  Watch it here:

The president seemed unaware that you can’t take part in the scheme if you are still a student.  The NYSC was set up in 1973 to involve graduates from universities and polytechnics in the development of the country, by sending them to spend a year after graduation outside their states of origin.

As Buhari left secondary school, with or without a school certificate – depending on who you ask, and joined the army, ostensibly with no capacity for higher education, he appears to know little about the requirements of the NYSC scheme.  And as he has consistently shown in the past, he lacks the intellectual curiosity to learn about stuff he doesn’t know.

It’s hardly surprising that constitutional expert and retired law professor Ben Nwabueze said in March last year that Buhari lacked intellectual capacity to rule the country.  “I do not think that it is a question of not being prepared. Don’t forget that the 2015 election was his fourth time of contesting, of making an attempt at being President. He tried to be president for 12 years. So, he had more than enough time to prepare himself if he had the capacity. So, it is not that he was not prepared. The fact is that he lacks the capacity to govern as the problems are beyond him.

“Even if you give him 20 years to prepare, it would still be beyond his capacity. Nigeria is a very complex country. I have told you before, that we have 389 ethnic nationalities. The complexities and the issues involved in ruling such a country are huge. Leading such a complex country is an intellectual issue and Buhari does not have the intellectual capacity to comprehend what it means to govern the country.”
