British MP Angela Rayner on Biafran human rights

British Labour Party MP Angela Rayner, representing Ashton-under-Lyne asked a question about Biafra during a debate in the House of Commons on International Human Rights Day on Thursday.

She asked: “On this international human rights day, does the hon. Gentleman agree that the issue of violation of the Igbo tribe’s human rights needs to be resolved, and that the Biafran leader should be released, as has been suggested in representations by my right hon. and learned Friend the Member for Camberwell and Peckham (Ms Harman)?”

The Conservative MP for Tonbridge and Malling Tom Tugendhat replied: “The hon. Lady clearly speaks with great knowledge of those issues. I am sure that she will raise them with the Foreign Secretary and the Secretary of State for International Development on the appropriate occasions.”

MP Rayner is a former trade union official with Unison, one of the UK’s largest unions. She made reference in her question to the letter written to the British Foreign Secretary by Nnamdi Kanu’s MP and former deputy leader of the Labour Party Harriet Harman.
