Greater humanitarian and media access resulting from the increased effort in 2015 by the Nigerian military to combat Boko Haram laid bare the devastating effects of the eight year insurgency in Nigeria’s north-east. Thousands have been killed, while millions more have been displaced and livelihoods decimated as a humanitarian crisis has unfolded.
This Voice of America documentary, Boko Haram: Journey from Evil, details the conditions that allowed Boko Haram to gain a foothold in the region and the group’s turn towards violent extremism. With the documentary’s lens on human stories of individuals that have lived through or engaged with the crisis, it examines the needs and possibilities for recovery, and prospects for the rehabilitation and reintegration of former combatants.
