In this campaign video from 1993 MKO Abiola and the SDP were claiming that they were the answer to all our problems of “no job, no food, no light, dirty water, no drugs in hospitals, transport fare chopping all the money you make”, etc.
The SDP promised “action”, “progress”, and so on. While Abiola, despite winning the election never took over power because the results were annulled, he was neck deep involved in the corrupt regimes that meant such basics were denied to the majority of Nigerians.
Abiola’s colleagues, including Baba Gana Kingibe his running mate, Ebenezer Babatope, and so on went on to join the dictator Sani Abacha’s regime, and further entrenched the misery of Nigerians.
Kingibe is now in the transition committee of president-elect Buhahari, who has been swept into power on promises similar to Abiola’s in 1993.
They call it “change”, but the more things change, the more the remain the same for long-suffering Nigerians.
