The long wait for Victor Osimhen to make his debut this season is over. The Nigerian youngster came on in the 84th minute for Divock Origi in Wolfsburg’s home 1-1 draw against Mainz over the weekend.
Wolfsburg coach, Martin Schmidt, gave Osimhen his debut because of his dedication in training. Schmidt told local paper Wolfsburger Allgemeine: “He [Osimhen] trained very well and scored the most goals. He is the most effective runner and I wanted to reward him.”
It appears that Schmidt’s faith in Osimhen is growing. The 18 year old Nigerian is still learning the ropes, but he has moved up the striking pecking order in Mario Gomez’s absence. Belgian Landry Dimata, who is also in contention to lead the attack did not make the bench against Mainz.
Gomez is expected to be back for Wolfsburg’s next match against Bayer Leverkusen. Osimhen will be hoping that his cameo last Saturday in the Volkswagen Arena would be enough to be in the match-day squad.
But there is no doubt that the Nigerian is making progress. If he stays injury free and continues to work hard with dedication, he has the makings of a Bundesliga star.
