Victor Moses’s Man of the Match performance helps Chelsea beat Burnley 2-1

Nigeria international Victor Moses put in one of his best performances in a Chelsea shirt as he scored the second goal and his cross was deflected for the first in his club’s 2-1 win away to Burnley.

It was a much-needed boost for the Blues as they prepare for Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium against Southampton.  The Cup represents Chelsea’s last hope for silverware in what has been a disappointing season, in which the deposed league champions only have a remote chance of finishing fourth to earn a place in the Champions League. They are five points behind fourth-placed Tottenham with four games to go.

Against a spirited Burnley, who have exceeded all expectations and are currently seventh in the league, a pull back from Moses on the 20th minute in the direction of striker Olivier Giroud, following a typical buccaneering run,  was diverted into the Burnley goal by defender Kevin Long.

Burnley came back in the 64th minute when Ashley Barnes deflected a long range effort from Johann Berg Gudmundsson beyond Chelsea goalie Thibaut Courtois.  But Moses will have the last word on proceedings.  A cross from Emerson from the left found his fellow rampaging wing-back at the back post.  The Nigerian was clinical with his low shot.

Moses’s numbers were impressive:

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Moses said: “I thought we deserved the three points today from start to finish.

“It is not an easy place to come and win. We want to take each game as it comes.

“We can’t write ourselves off. We just need to finish as strongly as we can.”
Nigerian fans will also be hoping that Moses carries this strong finish into the World Cup finals in Russia in June.
