Nigeria’s German coach Gernot Rohr associated the problems his team encountered in Thursday’s friendly against Senegal at Barnet FC’s stadium in west London to the fact that several of his players were not getting regular games at their clubs.
These include Kelechi Iheanacho at Manchester City, who scored Nigeria’s equaliser from the penalty spot in the 1-1 draw. Others not playing regularly for their clubs are Leicester’s Ahmed Musa and Elderson Echiejile currently on loan to Sporting Gijon in Spain.
Rohr explained that they needed more games to get into their rhythm and it showed against Senegal, who have played together a lot more, including during January’s Africa Cup of Nations in which Nigeria failed to qualify.

The coach also said they were missing key players like Victor Moses and Mikel Obi. He also rued the cancellation of the friendly scheduled today with Burkina Faso at the same venue due to visa problems for several Burkinabe players. Instead, the Nigerian team will play a training game this evening against some UK-based players that Rohr wanted to take a look at.
Nigeria faces South Africa in June in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier and Cameroon in a 2018 World Cup qualifier in August.
