Nigerian youngster Kelechi Iheanacho scored twice to help Manchester City beat Stoke at home in the Premier League this afternoon.
It was a Man-of-the-Match performance for the striker, who started the game as coach Manuel Pellegrini rested several key players because of the huge Champions League semifinal first leg against Real Madrid on Tuesday. Iheanacho may not start in that game, but he has shown the coach that he can be a threat from the bench.
Watch the goals and highlights:
The Nigerian got his brace in the second half, the first coming from a side-foot from close range after a Pablo Zabaleta cross. His second goal and City’s fourth came 10 minutes later, collecting a pass from Wilfried Bony, rounding the Stoke keeper and scoring.
Goals from Fernando and a penalty from Sergio Aguero, after Iheanacho was dragged down in the box by Stoke captain Ryan Shawcross in the first half, made the match seem like a stroll in the park for City.
Iheanacho now has 11 goals this season and was “pleased” with his performance after the match. He thanked his teammates for helping him grow as a player. He said “I have to keep improving and working hard to show my qualities” whenever he is asked to step up to the first team.
Goalie Joe Hart said Iheanacho, with 24 league appearances in this his debut season, has been “brilliant for us, he’s worked hard, he’s been brilliant for the squad and we are glad to have him”.
