In-form Odion Ighalo scored his seventh goal in the last six games in December for Watford, but it was not enough to stop his team from losing 2-1 at home to Tottenham yesterday.
Ighalo’s goal – he has now scored in five consecutive games – equalised for Watford in the 41st minute, but they then had Nathan Ake sent off after 62 minutes, and the 10 men could not hold on, conceding in the dying minutes.
Tottenham had set up their stall to stop the marauding strike pair of Ighalo and Troy Deeney by playing three central defenders – Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Eric Dier. But the Nigerian hitman out-muscled Dier from a Deeney knockdown, controlled the ball and slotted it past keeper Hugo Lloris.
Watch the goals:
Ighalo now has 14 goals in 19 Premier League matches, in second place on the scoring charts, and his form has attracted the attention of La Liga giants Atletico Madrid, who are said to be considering £12m bid to bring the Nigerian back to Spain where he had two spells on loan to Granada from 2009-10 and then from 2011-14. Atletico have reportedly watched Ighalo five times this season. Italian club Roma are also interested.
He has now scored more league goals in 2015 than any other player in England’s top four tiers – 30.
