The 22-year-old midfielder joined Arsenal as a nine year old and has come through their Hale End Academy. Since breaking into the first team in 2015, he has made 98 appearances, scoring nine goals.
Alex is also a Nigeria international, with six goals in 20 games for the senior team so far. He is the nephew of legendary Nigeria ex-international skipper Jay Jay Okocha.
Arsenal head coach Unai Emery said: “I’m very pleased Alex has signed a new contract with us. He is a great example of a player who can succeed from the academy through hard work and I look forward to working with him and our other talented young players in the squad.”
Emery took over at Arsenal at the end of last season, following the exit of Arsenal’s long-serving coach Arsene Wenger, who was like a mentor to Iwobi. Many Arsenal watchers have been keen to see what the future holds for Iwobi under a new coach. This new contract seems to be a ringing endorsement from the former Seville and PSG coach.
