Hearing in the Imo State governorship elections case between the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Governorship Rochas Okorocha, and his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) opponent, Emeka Ihedioha, began last week at the Election Petitions Tribunal in Owerri, the state capital.
A source close to the Ihedioha camp has revealed that they have a witness and video evidence of how the result sheets were tampered with in favour of Okorocha. The witness was involved in the vote-rigging and seems to have switched camps. He has been in hiding since and the source claims that the witness’s life is at risk.
Okorocha doesn’t seem to have the backing of the APC hierarchy, including President Buhari. Ihedioha, who was deputy speaker of the House of Representatives and very close to the then speaker Aminu Tambuwal, has received assurances from Tambuwal, who is now the governor of Sokoto State and potential APC presidential candidate in 2019, that there will be no interference in the legal process from the party.
The source also disclosed that Ihedioha has agreed with Tambuwal to eventually defect to the APC if the tribunal rules in his favour and he becomes the governor of Imo State.
