An Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) source has revealed to Naijiant.com how Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu was interrogated on Tuesday about his huge property portfolio, spanning Abuja, Enugu, Dubai, the United States and London.
Some of the information about the Ekweremadu real estate was reported a few months ago here:
The EFCC source claimed that Ekweremadu’s property acquisition drive started from when he became a senator in 2003. During the questioning, the senator tried to call the bluff of the EFCC agents, first denying ownership of the 22 or so properties he was questioned about.
The interrogators then proceeded to flash documents detailing the properties in his face and he started singing a different tune: “My lawyer will answer that”. The source added: “Then as the grilling continued, he started looking weak and funny. So after going through the 22 properties, ……[EFCC agents] brought out a list of fresh 38 properties with their locations. Ekweremadu glanced through them and became very sick and started showing signs of high blood pressure. Then he was no more responding.”
The source said that the EFCC operatives then called in Ekweremadu’s aides, who immediately took their boss to hospital.
The Nation newspaper confirmed that the properties Ekweremadu was questioned about include:
“No. 11, Evans Enwerem Street, Apo Legislative Quarters, Apo, Abuja; Plot 2633 Kyami, Abuja; Housing Estate (Plot 1106 CRD, Cadastral Zone 07-07, Lugbe, Abuja; Plot 2782 Asokoro Extension, Abuja, and Houses at Citi Park Estate, Gwagwalada, Abuja.

“The properties abroad in London include Flat 4 Varsity Court, Harmer Street, WIH 4NW, London; and 52 Ayleston Avenue, NW6 7AB, London.

A source who has been to the London property in Willesden Green said it is worth about £2m, has electric-controlled gates and a swimming pool.
Incidentally, Ekweremadu has cancelled all his engagements this week. He was also scheduled to be guest of [dis]honour at the College of Immaculate Conception Enugu Old Boys Convention this Saturday in Enugu. His invitation was very controversial with many former students of the school objecting to the presence of such a politician with no links to the school. In the light of his current troubles, the objectors seemed to have been proven right and Ekweremadu is very likely to be a no show on Saturday.
