Students protest in Owerri

Most of the Imo State capital of Owerri was on lockdown yesterday as students from several institutions blockaded the city in portest against the non-payment of teachers’ and workers’ salaries, most of whom are the parents of the students.

A witness informed us that the students claimed “nothing was happening” in the state, especially in Owerri, known for the high number of public sector workers that live in the city.

Anti-riot squad police were reported to have fired teargas at the protesters and continued to fire it in the direction any pockets of youths found standing in street corners.

The governor Rochas Okorocha, who has been the target for much of the discontent, is yet to comment on the situation.
