The embattled Senate President Bukola Saraki has the solid support of all the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators in his bid to remain in office.
Saraki of the All Peoples Congress (APC) is involved in a legal tussle with the Code of Conduct Tribunal. The tribuanal had earlier ordered his arrest for failing to appear before it to answer charges of alleged false declaration of assets while he was Governor of Kwara State between 2003 and 2007. Saraki lodged an appeal last night against that order.
Sources in the National Assembly have indicated that Saraki’s troubles are related to his battle with APC leader Bola Tinubu over control of the Senate. It would be recalled that Saraki usurped the Senate presidency against the wishes of the party leadership by collaborating with the opposition PDP.
The current legal battle is seen by many as an attempt to wrest the Senate presidency from Saraki and plans are afoot to by Tinubu loyalists in the Senate to impeach Saraki. If impeachment proceedings go to a vote in the Senate, Saraki can count on the support of PDP senators, who are likely to vote as a bloc. It is also likely that Saraki’s supporters like Dino Melaye would not let any impeachment attempt go ahead with a fight – literally.
A source has revealed that Saraki is working closely with the PDP (he left the party last year for the APC). The source said that the Senate president intends to return to the PDP and run for president in 2019.
