Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the secessionist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), returned to the United Kingdom yesterday from Israel, where he has been holed up for several months after the Nigerian army raided his compound in Abia State in September 2017.
But before Kanu’s arrival in the UK, where he is also a citizen, comments attributed to him in relation to the suspension last week of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, had been circulating on social media. Kanu reportedly said in December last year: “If you doubt me that the 2019 presidential election is already rigged, you will be convinced when the cabal moves against the Chief Justice of Nigeria in the coming weeks”.
The “cabal” refers to the handful of men that are rumoured to have “hijacked” the presidency and are actually running the country instead of President Muhammadu Buhari. Kanu’s comments seem prophetic as Buhari suspended Onnoghen in a controversial move that many believe was related to the presidential (s)election to be held next month. Buhari swiftly swore in Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed as Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria on Friday – a move that belied his “Baba Go Slow” nickname. And the new man didn’t waste time in appointing election tribunal members. Many are expecting next month’s vote to end up in the courts.
Kanu and his followers like to front like he is a prophet, with God, aka “Chukwu Okike Abiama”, revealing the future to him. But a source has told Naijiant.com that Kanu got his information via non-heavenly means. Buhari’s main opponents, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and several of his colleagues met in Dubai in November last year. The outcome of the meeting was tagged the “Dubai Strategy”, covering how to wrest the presidency from the incumbent. Our source claimed that the “strategy” involved buying judges including the Chief Justice. Senate President Bukola Saraki was responsible for making the payments to Onnoghen and his colleagues. This plan was then leaked to the presidency by a “traitor” at the Dubai meeting and the leak prompted the move to get rid of Onnoghen.
Kanu is said to have got wind of the “Dubai strategy” and the presidency’s plans to checkmate it.
