Nasir el-Rufai, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governor of Kaduna State, tweeted on Independence Day about the profligacy of the Goodluck Jonathan administration.
He highlighted what he called “The APC/PMB change we voted for” by listing the costs of Independence Day celebrations for the past five years:
2011 – 13bn naira
2012 – 15bn naira
2013 – 14bn naira
2014 – 22bn naira
This was contrasted against the 70m naira spent on the celebrations by the current Muhammadu Buhari regime.
But el-Rufai should be the last person to pontificate about the frugal use of public funds. A source informed us that when he was the minister for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), he put his then girlfriend, who was on her National Youth Service at the time, on the payroll on 10m naira ($50,000 in today’s money) a year.
El-Rufai surely voted for a lot of “change” for the woman from the FCT budget!
