A source close to Sambo Dasuki the National Security Adviser to the president has revealed to us that the PDP tried some jiggery-pokery to get the electoral commissioner in Jigawa State to agree to fix the result of the presidential (s)election there in favour of Goodluck Jonathan.
$5m was handed over to the commissioner at a meeting in Dubai with a major-general in the Nigerian Army.
Despite taking the money, the commissioner later claimed he could not switch the results in the state in the president’s favour. Our source was not quite sure why, but said it may have been related to the threat of violence. He said many APC supporters in the predominantly Muslim state saw the (s)election in religious terms as “between believers and unbelievers”. Buhahahari is a Muslim and Jonathan is a Christian. The source claimed that at polling units anyone that remotely looked like a PDP voter was threatened with machetes and cutlasses. Markets in many northern towns usually run out of machetes and cutlasses during (s)elections.
Buhahari eventually “won” in Jigawa State with 885,988 votes to Goodluck’s 142,904.
In a related incident, we reported that the electoral commissioner who died with his wife and two children in a suspicious fire in their home in Kano just after the presidential (s)election results were announced, was alleged to have been bribed by the PDP to also fix the vote in Kano State and reneged on the agreement.
