Ebelechukwu Obiano, the very combative wife of Anambra State governor Willie Obiano, has set her sights at succeeding her husband at the expiry of his second term in 2021.
Mrs Obiano, who loves her Igbo title “Osodieme” (loosely translated as “one that acts with her husband”), has been described by a handful of sources close to Government House in Awka as not just the power behind the throne but the person sitting tight on the throne.
One source told Naijiant.com that “Willie just drinks” and “has left his wife in control”. Nothing is done in the state without her authorisation and the source claims that the power has got to her head. While her husband is drunk, she is drunk on power. Mrs Obiano is now said to be in control of the ruling party in the state, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and has eliminated most of the opposition standing in her way of succeeding her husband as governor.
The source was seething with anger at the First Lady’s nerve in contemplating becoming governor in a state like Anambra, arguably with the highest number of intellectuals in Igboland. This is a state that produced the likes of Nigeria’s founding father Nnamdi Azikiwe, mathematician Chike Obi, bestselling author Chinua Achebe, former Commonwealth Secretary-General Emeka Anyaoku, and the founder of APGA and Biafran civil war leader Emeka Ojukwu.
Mrs Obiano has already fallen out with Ojukwu’s widow Bianca, has history of allegedly slapping aides, reportedly tore her husband’s shirt in public, and is said to be not averse to raining abuse at people that disagree with her on Whatsapp groups.
Our source moaned at the prospects that such a woman, whom he claimed was of limited education, could end up in charge of Anambra State. But the current governor doesn’t seem to share that concern – as long as alcohol is nearby.
However, another source said APGA “was finished” in Anambra and would “die off” after Obiano completes his second term. This was, in the source’s view, because the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has perfected plans to take over the state, with possibly former aviation minister Osita Chidoka as governor.
