President Muhammadu Buhari met with his predecessor Goodluck Jonathan earlier this month in what was termed a “closed door” meeting.
There was much speculation in the Nigerian media over what was on the agenda. A source at the meeting has revealed that President Buhari asked Jonathan to intervene and reach out to the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) and help bring a stop to their disruption of oil production in the Niger Delta.
The NDA started blowing up pipelines early this year and prevented President Buhari from launching the environmental clean up of oil spills in the Ogoni area of Rivers State on the 2nd of June by threatening to kill him if he showed up.
The source said that Jonathan informed Buhari that since leaving office, he has not been in touch with politicians that may have influence over the militants, but that he would see what he could do to help stop the attacks.
Another source close to the militants claimed that they have a lot of respect for Jonathan and would like to see him return to active politics.
There have been rumours that the NDA are sponsored by some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) politicians from the Niger Delta.
