President Muhammadu Buhari hardly reads documents handed to him by aides, advisers and ministers. This was revealed to Naijiant.com by a retired major-general in the Nigerian army, who also served as an aide to Sambo Dasuki, the former National Security Adviser who has been in detention since December 2015 on allegations of diverting $2bn of public funds to private use.
The Dasuki aide is currently in exile from Nigeria as he fears arrest in connection with the allegations that his principal faces. He has known Buhari from the president’s days as a senior officer in the army and military dictator and said that the Nigerian ruler, who is seeking reelection in 2019, can hardly read beyond the first page of any document placed in front of him.
The former intelligence officer said Buhari has virtually “delegated everything” to those around him. The president doesn’t even bother to ask his ministers how things are going in their ministries. He is “just not interested”, according to the retired major-general.
He added that Buhari has “always been like this” in terms of being incurious and not wanting to read, but it has become worse due to age and ill health.
Junaid Mohammed, a Second Republic legislator, alleged in February that Buhari couldn’t read two pages of a book in a year.
