The new governor of Rivers State Eze Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has promised to probe the previous All Progressives Congress (APC) administration of Rotimi Amaechi and recover funds he claims were diverted to private pockets.
Wike has already start recovering vehicles from Amaechi loyalists that the governor claims belong to the state.
Amaechi fell out with his deputy governor Tele Ikuru in the last few days of the administration and Ikuru defected to the PDP. Ikuru said earlier this month during a thanksgiving service: “I served this government for seven years and seven months under Amaechi, because I was with Omehia for five months. At the end of the seven years and seven months Amaechi did not think that I deserved any parting gift in spite of the fact that in the course of this administration, by reason of the office I occupied, I returned several monies to him valued over two billion Naira cash at different times during one work or the other.”
A source has revealed to us that just before Amaechi left office, he invited those loyal to him and “settled” them. He told one of the loyalists: “People close to me abandoned me, even my deputy governor, but you stayed with me”. That loyalist was rewarded with $1m in cash and a brand new Jaguar. Others got different sums in dollars and different expensive cars and SUVs.
