Uche Ekwunife, whose (s)election to the Senate to represent Anambra Central in March last year was annulled by the Appeal Court on the grounds that there was no valid primary to make her the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, quickly switched to the All Progressives Congress on Friday, in order to contest the rerun of the (s)election ordered by the court.
The APC candidate at the time of the March (s)election, Chris Ngige, is now the Minister for Labour, so has no interest in contesting again. But Ekwunife’s defection and indecent haste in going for the APC nomination has upset party stalwarts in the state. Undeterred, she has already flooded the state with her posters, with the symbol of her new party.
Ekwunife, aka “Iyom”, claimed: “ It’s better now for me to join the APC. Let the heat be there, I am already on campaigns for my return to the senate, to complete my contract with the people of Anambra Central District.”
It remains to be seen whether this view is shared by the people of the zone, many of whom claim she rigged heavily in March.
There are rumours that her switch to the APC has been backed by President Muhammadu Buhari.
