A foundation owned by Bobo Chicago Bola Tinubu, the former governor of Lagos State, alleged “bagman” for drug dealers, self-appointed national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), distributed foodstuff to the needy in Lagos today.
This act of charity was broadcast on the TVC channel owned by the man himself.
Nuhu Ribadu, former boss of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), once said that Tinubu’s “corruption was of international dimension”.
The recipients of Tinubu’s generosity obviously expressed gratitude for his kindness. However, Martin Luther King said: “On the one hand we are called to play the good Samaritan on life’s roadside, but that will be only an initial act. One day we must come to see that the whole Jericho road must be transformed so that men and women will not be constantly beaten and robbed as they make their journey on life’s highway. True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar, it is not haphazard and superficial. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.”
Tinubu as governor of Lagos State for eight years did precious little to restructure the edifice that produces beggars in his state. In fact, his corruption in those eight years and beyond contributed to impoverishing more people in the state.
The money he spent on the charitable donation of food was nothing more than tokenism and a return of a minuscule amount of what he has stolen from the rightful owners. This is like a carjacker snatching your car and giving you money for your taxi fare home.
