President Muhammadu Buhari met former president Olusegun Obasanjo at Aso Rock, the presidential villa, on Friday night.
Both men did not reveal what was discussed. Buhari’s continued dealings with Obasanjo can’t be good news for Nigeria. The president has a tendency to heed the counsel of his former military colleagues. But Obasanjo is a major contributor to most of the problems Nigeria is facing, from poor power supply to poverty, from crumbling infrastructure to corruption. Name an Nigerian problem, Obasanjo’s 11 years in power helped to make it worse.
How Buhari can claim to be against corruption and still be advised by Obasanjo is a contraction no one can really explain. Like Fela Kuti said in “Army Arrangement”:
“Me Fela, I challenge Obasanjo
Na wayo him dey all the time
Make him carry me go any court
I go open book for am”
I am sure if Buhari opened the books of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) there should be enough evidence of Obasanjo’s looting to ensure he spends the rest of his life in jail.
But instead of being in jail, Obasanjo is going in and out of a presidential mansion occupied by someone who claims he wants to fight corruption. This is no different from a police chief having regular meetings with an armed robber.
