Ifeanyi Ubah: Peter Obi wants his 7bn naira back from Willie Obiano

Business mogul Ifeanyi Ubah, who unsuccessfully attempted to secure the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket for the Anambra State governorship race in November, accused a former governor of the state, Peter Obi, on national TV of trying to extort 7bn naira ($19m) from the current governor Willie Obiano.

Ubah alleged that Obi “installed” Obiano as his replacement with the money and is trying to get his cash back.  Obi fell out with his successor not long after Obiano took office in March 2014.  Ubah seems to be suggesting that the quarrel was related to this amount.

Obiano is running for reelection under the banner of Obi’s former party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), from which Obi left for the PDP.  Ubah lost out the PDP nomination to Oseloka Obaze, seen by many as Obi’s stooge – much like Obiano was meant to be about four years ago.

Ubah claimed that Obaze is a “nobody” who is not even known in his local government area and that Obi was just using him to “checkmate” Obiano into paying his  former political “godfather” the amount Obi thinks he is owed.  Ubah also threatened to reveal further details about the alleged deal in due course.

Obi has spent a lot of time since leaving Government House in Awka trying to cultivate an image of prudence and reportedly present himself as a credible candidate for the presidency.  The ugly reality of his stewardship of the state is a different story.

Earlier this month, Obi claimed that he will fight against the reelection of Obiano “with the last drop of my last blood”.  Obi also regretted backing Obiano for the governorship, claiming that his alleged legacy from eight years as governor was being frittered away by Obiano’s cluelessness and bad governance.
