Customs boss Hameed Ali, a retired colonel, has been in the news lately claiming that President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime has been “derailed” by former members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Buhari came into power in 2015 on a platform of “change”, condemning the profligacy of the then ruling PDP.
With their propaganda in overdrive, Buhari and his loyalists such as Ali, tried to portray themselves as templates in prudence, who will protect the nation’s dwindling resources with their lives. Buhari the candidate condemned medical tourism and endless foreign trips by public office holders under the previous regime. In the last two years he has spent more time abroad for medical reasons and junkets than any previous president.
Ali, a former military administrator of Kaduna State, still drove a “504 Peugeot saloon car” – according to the ruling All Progressives Congress’ (APC) propaganda at the time he was appointed as head of the customs agency. Just like his boss Buhari, it didn’t take Ali long to ditch the pretenses of frugality once they were in office. An official jet is now preferred to a Peugeot.
The likes of Ali and Buhari are the ones that derailed their “change” agenda, that was built on nothing but flights of fantasy sold to the gullible.
