Buhari wins award for stupid propaganda

On Monday one of President Muhammadu Buhari’s social media propagandists, Lauretta Onochie, tweeted:

She added: “The Award was presented to him in Abuja by the Family of Martin Luther King led by Luther’s Wife. Martin Luther King’s Wife said PMB won this award because of America’s recognition of his Anti Corruption war, urging him not to be deterred!”

It takes a certain level of boneheaded ignorance to be unaware that the civil rights hero’s widow was Coretta Scott King and she died in 2006.  Naomi Barber King is apparently the widow of Martin Luther King’s brother, A.D. Williams King, and seemingly running her own operation for obvious reasons.  However, from watching the presentation on telly, it was clear that the so-called members of King’s family were part of some propaganda stunt.

This was confirmed in a tweet yesterday from the King Centre:

“Established in 1968 by Mrs. Coretta Scott King, The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change (“The King Center”) has been a global destination, resource center and community institution for over a quarter century”.  It is the official living memorial to Martin Luther King and anything else is clearly a renegade operation.

It has since been reported that this scam of an award was the brainchild of Buhari’s “Senior Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora” Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

We have wondered in the past what her job was about.  It looks like it is to arrange fake foreign awards for a fee.

What does a Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Affairs do?

The propaganda stunt, possibly with an eye on the reelection campaign, allegedly cost $3m.  If only these people spent as much time and money on what Martin Luther King called “programmes of social uplift”, Nigeria would be a better place and they won’t need stupid propaganda stunts to reelect their boss.
