APC presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari was meant to be in the UK for a “working visit”.
Part of this visit, according to an APC spokesman, included a speech at the Royal Institute of International Affairs aka Chatham House. Buhari was said to have flown into London last Friday.
There was no indication from Chatham House that Buhari was scheduled to speak there. But Buhari’s people claimed the speech will be on Thursday this week.
It is a bit odd that a man running for president in Nigeria would prefer to arrive in London almost a week before the day he was due to make a speech.
Buhari’s people then released several pictures to prove he was in London. Many on social media have claimed that the pictures were either taken a few years ago, or even in a hotel in Nigeria. The most recent of the photographs do not do justice to claim that Buhari is well enough for the rigours of the presidency.
He was due to speak on Saturday night at Westminster, but his wife turned up without him. If this was meant to be a “working visit”, it is not clear what work Buhari was doing. Maybe he is writing his Chatham House speech himself. I don’t think so.
A source close to Buhari’s circle claimed he is being treated for an undisclosed ailment in a hospital in Leicester. It has been suggested that he should be fit following the treatment to make his speech by Thursday.
Buhari’s silence on the matter and failure to address this issue head on is fuelling the rumours and counter rumours. This is likely to reach fever pitch if there is no speech at Chatham House on Thursday.
