Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) MPs Tom Elliott and Danny Kinahan have tabled an “Early Day Motion” on Biafra.
On “Biafra Independence” the motion states: “That this House recognises the calls for the independence of territories that constituted the Biafran Republic; acknowledges the Biafran issue could be improved with the co-operation of the Nigerian government by offering a referendum; and urges the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to use its diplomatic strength to assist in the resolution of this matter.”
Early Day Motions (EDMs) are formal motions submitted for debate in the House of Commons. However, very few are actually debated. EDMs allow MPs to draw attention to an event or cause. MPs register their support by signing individual motions.
This EDM has so far only received the support of the two MPs representing Fermanagh and South Tyrone and South Antrim in Northern Ireland.
Ironically, the UUP was formed to resist the separation of Northern Ireland from the UK, as two of their MPs support a motion for Biafran secession from Nigeria.
